I’m not a “car guy” in any sense of the word (and am actually fairly anti-car), so am finding it oddly emotional to say goodbye to my old 2008 Prius. I bought this for just over $10K when I was 19 with a 12.9% interest rate because it was the only way I could get to video gigs with gear. That questionable financial decision ended up working out, with the most reliable vehicle in the world moving me through space for well over a decade.
This car has done more off roading than 99% of Jeeps. I’ve camped in the trunk, drove up mountains, and crept through massive snowstorms. One time when I was much younger than I am now, my friends and I lost a joint in the car never to be found again, but through that experience we discovered a secret compartment that then became the designated spot to hold weed, never to be lost again. The Prius picked up a 12-week old Cooper and I drove it to my wedding.
I always thought I would drive it until I dropped it off at the junkyard. It feels wrong to be saying goodbye just shy of a quarter million miles while it still runs totally fine, but, at the same time, I guess I’m grateful to only have good memories not tainted by getting stranded somewhere at the end. Thanks for the memories.
